SUMMARY:Billion Bird Report!
DESCRIPTION:Presenter: Richard Heilbrun\, Program Leader\, Texas Parks & Wildlife Department\nDescription:  A recently released national report shows three billion birds have disappeared from the planet over the last 50 years\, but some bird groups are rebounding. Why are some birds doing well while others are declining? Which groups are most at risk? What are wildlife biologists and land managers doing to slow or reverse the decline? What else can we do? Join wildlife biologist Richard Heilbrun for an exploration into this groundbreaking discovery and what it means for Texas and for the birds that we hold dear to us around San Antonio.\nZoom Link:\n\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/84431139264?pwd=aU5KYzBMRWdYRGptclFEWkNMNzlnQT09Meeting ID: 844 3113 9264Passcode: 294250

SUMMARY:Lights Out San Antonio Training Fall Bird Surveys
DESCRIPTION:Learn everything you need to know about volunteering for the Lights Out San Antonio Fall Bird Surveys. We’ll be surveying three areas in downtown San Antonio on Tuesdays\, Thursdays\, and Saturdays between Sept. 5 and Oct. 30. You don’t need to know bird IDs\, but you will need to have the iNaturalist app on your phone to photograph any bird casualties you find. We’ll have three teams surveying each day from 6:00 to 8:00 AM and will meet in a downtown parking garage at 5:45 AM\, where parking will be free for volunteers. Join the training session here.

SUMMARY:A Kingdom of Birds: Birding in Saudi Arabia
DESCRIPTION:Situated where three biogeographical realms meet and transected by three major flyways\, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia boasts a rich avian diversity that belies its popular image as a vast\, empty desert. With over 500 species recorded to date\, almost two dozen of which are endemic or near-endemic to the Arabian Peninsula\, the once-famously closed kingdom is now the best destination to experience such iconic Arabian birds as Philby’s Partridge\, Arabian Woodpecker\, Asir Magpie\, Yemen Thrush\, and Yemen Linnet. Yet\, no matter where you find yourself in Saudi\, great birding abounds. Join Gregory Askew via Zoom as he throws open the doors on a kingdom of birds.

SUMMARY:The Serengeti: Mega-Migration and Super Diversity
DESCRIPTION:Come with Bexar Audubon Society as we experience a virtual visit to the Serengeti with Peter Roberts. The Serengeti ecosystem spans much of northern Tanzania into southern Kenya in East Africa and covers 12\,000 sq. km (5\,695 sq. miles). It is famous for one of the most spectacular mass game migrations in the world\, involving over 1 million blue wildebeest (Connochaetes taurinus)\, 200\,000 plains zebra (Equus burchelli)\, and 400\,000 Thomson’s gazelle (Gazella thomsoni). The migration represents one of the last remnants of a large\, mammal-dominated ecosystem which has existed in Africa since at least the Pleistocene (the Ice Age epoch 2.5 million years to 11\,700 years ago).

SUMMARY:Doc & Martha\, Matagorda Island Naturalists: Online Documentary
DESCRIPTION:Join Doc & Martha as they take us on a journey to Matagorda Island\, Texas’ last truly wild barrier island. Following a 30-year career as a biology professor\, Wayne H. “Doc” McAlister joined the US Fish & Wildlife Service as an Educator at the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge. He and wife Martha left the mainland and lived ten years on the island.  With keen eyes and a thorough grounding in biology and the connectedness of things\, Doc & Martha share nature through tours and their books\, Life on Matagorda Island and Matagorda Island: A Naturalist’s Guide. Sponsored by the Gulf Coast Texas Master Naturalists\, Doc & Martha (26 minutes) was produced\, filmed\, and edited by Bexar Audubon Society and San Antonio Audubon Society member Greg Pasztor\, who will be available after the screening for questions.
